The Munro quote reminds me of the adolescent paradox: "Don't tell me how to dress--I'm my own person." And then you look around the Mall and find 400 16 year-olds dressed exactly alike.

The second points out the discernment needed by organizations when they start benchmarking against "successful" firms in order to make positive changes for the future.

a. The benchmarked firms have their own methodology, culture, management, and procedures that work for them because they developed what was best for them.

b. The information provided in benchmarking studies is already old news.

c. Being someone or something other than what you are--or what you can be--defies all laws of nature.

I second Rob's link to Clickz - http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3613801 - just without the last comma ;-) - still I think that immitation is what drives us forward; immitation mistakes that prove themselves viable and sometimes better than the original could be the main drive in what others call 'evolution'.

Bryan,

I don't know if this will help, but in this article, http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3613801, Rebecca Lieb said this:

A day or so later at a marketing event, Len Ellis, one of the wisest men in this industry, declaimed from the podium, "Best practices are yesterday's news. Tell me about emerging practices."
