No More Landing Pages

April 25th, 2007

We don't need no stinking landing pages!Ahah! It appears the choir is growing.

I recently wrote about hitting the landing page optimization wall. I discussed the problems of trying to optimize traditional landing pages. It appears I am not alone.

Check out the No More Landing Pages blog.

Here’s a quick excerpt:

Whatever your conversion rate is, you can do better if you lose the shackles of the landing page. Whatever brand damage you’re inflicting can be reversed if you think differently. Landing pages are outdated, archaic and, like Anna…

Speed Test: Which Landing Page Element Should Load First?

April 25th, 2007

Apparently, Verizon Wireless doesn’t always keep up with GrokDotCom. (Bryan recently explained the impact of optimizing your images for a fast load time. )

Will Microsoft Outlook 2007 Screw Up Your Email?

April 24th, 2007

Microsoft Outlook 2007If you market via email, it could! If you haven’t heard by now, Microsoft changed the HTML rendering engine in Outlook (their mail client) from Internet Explorer to Word.

Of course, Microsoft had their reasons for doing it, inconvenient though it might be. However, it amounts to a step backwards in terms of CSS (define) support. We recently had to deal with this issue at our office, and it’s no fun.

According to Campaign Monitor:

Using tables for layout is a dying art in the…

Forrester on the Best Email Marketing Ever…

April 24th, 2007

(Full disclosure: Yes, Rentvillas is a past client, but, no, we’re not to be credited here. Kevin Pidduck and his fine team executed this email strategy. Smart marketers will look past their tactics to the principles at work… )

Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research gushes over’s latest email to him, remarking at how it succeeded at tapping into his emotional right-brain:

“…this marketing email actually managed to stimulate the nostalgia I had for that trip, and generating an emotion like that from an…

Download Ad Age’s 2007 Digital Marketing World Fact Pack

April 23rd, 2007

It was pretty good last year, so I just downloaded my copy.

“This, our second annual Digital Fact Pack, is full of fascinating numbers. Some highlights:

Big players continue to dominate online advertising, thanks to both their audience scale and their ability to re-aggregate smaller, disparate audiences. The top 10 online properties took in 99% of 2006 gross online ad revenue. Net online ad revenue is a slightly less stilted story, but continues to illustrate that when it comes to online ad revenue,…

The One Website Test You Probably Never Thought Of…

April 23rd, 2007

What do Future Now employees sit around the proverbial campfire and shoot the breeze about? Conversion optimization stories, among other things.

I told this one to some new people and they urged me to blog about it.

Several years ago, a GrokDotCom reader emailed me and asked me to do them a favor and look at their website. They were getting a reasonable amount of traffic but weren’t converting any into leads. As I looked at the website, I realized that, while they…

Mashable: “MySpace is Better Than Porn”

April 23rd, 2007

Mashable‘s headline got my attention, too. You can read ‘MySpace is Better Than Porn‘ for yourself but here’s an excerpt:

“Well, almost. The Economist (via has pulled up the Hitwise stats to show that social networks are about to overtake sex sites in the US any day now. The metric being measured is percentage share of site visits, with % visits to sites like MySpace, Bebo and Facebook on the increase, and % visits to porn sites going down (no pun intended).…

Should IBM Acquire Amazon?

April 23rd, 2007

I just read an interesting post on about why RedMonk’s James Governor believes IBM should acquire Amazon. The thinking is that “IBM is too risk averse, large-enterprise focused, and lacks a strong presence at the core of the Internet.” It’s just speculation and he doesn’t think it will happen, anyway. Even ignoring the cultural differences, I might be dense, but I don’t understand why anyone would offer this as a good idea or even one worth considering. IBM has never…

Do You Blog Like A Girl?

April 20th, 2007

Apparently, I do. At least that’s what the fine Melissa Burdon tells me, and she has the research to prove it. Want to haze your co-workers:

I’ll admit, the study lost some credibility with me (it’s not just a parlor trick, the study actually has a pretty robust algorithm behind it) when I first checked it out- I ran the following three posts through it:

“Measuring the Piss-Off Factor” “Measuring the Piss-Off Factor, Part II” “Marketing in the In-Between”

You’ll notice the common author, resident…

Google Website Optimizer Test: Simply Adding Text

April 20th, 2007 is a lead generation site for retirement communities that just began using Google Website Optimizer last week. We’ve set up a couple of different tests, and this is the first one that was implemented.

Problem: has tons of great content but visitors aren’t seeing all of it. They have high quality pictures on their site and they aren’t being seen. If the picture on property pages are clicked slideshows pop-ups, displaying multiple pictures. Visitors lose persuasive momentum by not seeing…
