When Did Amazon Change its Search Results?

It seems Amazon (AMZN) has updated their internal search results, with some pretty cool results. After Perceptual Edge’s Stephen Few commented on Bryan’s post on data visualization , we did an Amazon search for Stephen and found this (see thumbnail pic). Not only do you get to see all of Stephen’s books, but it now shows other books where the author is quoted.
We then searched for “Bryan Eisenberg ” and — whereas they used to have only Bryan’s books and Pig Jokes and Puzzles by Lisa Eisenberg (no relation) — it now showed books in which Bryan wasn’t even aware he’d been quoted. How cool! Amazon must be using its “Look Inside” function to increase the relevance of its search results. It even tells you on which pages the author’s quoted. (Nice one!) And, sure enough, when we searched for authors who’d quoted Bryan, like Jim Sterne , Bryan’s books showed up in the results as well.
Hmm… and all this time, we’ve been wondering why Bryan, who happens to keep kosher, kept showing up next to a pig book. In fact, he didn’t even know he’d been quoted in a few of the books that were listed. Pretty cool, don’t you think?
Is your site’s internal search this relevant? If not, it’s worth aspiring to. It’s a great way to engage long tail customers — instead of leaving them stranded — and leave them much more likely to buy.
