Why I Nearly Flaked on the Season Pass

November 9th, 2007

Last winter, when I made my temporary move to Salt Lake City, I started researching the local ski resorts. The mountains surrounding the city are known for having some of the world’s biggest and lightest powder snow. I was convinced by the customer reviews I’d read online that were written by local ski bums from Utah.

Time and again, I read and heard reviews about the Snowbird resort having some of the most challenging terrain, coated by the area’s best powder. So…

Guarantee Holiday Sales

November 9th, 2007

In cubicles and corner offices around the e-tailing world, eager marketers and merchandisers are cranking up for the 2008 holiday season, with visions of plump virtual shopping carts dancing in their heads.

Meanwhile, shoppers go about their lives. Time ticks. The burden of seasonal shopping grows bigger as the number of shopping days until Christmas gets smaller.

Each year the season seems to start earlier. Shoppers are faced with more choices than ever, and online retailers are getting savvier, offering better wares…

A Simple A/B Test Suggestion for

November 8th, 2007

While searching for new sneakers, I decided on a pair of Pumas. I love their style and color options, and they always have the newest selections. The same goes for their website. It’s chock full of flash — literally. I normally don’t mind the extra attention to design — in fact I appreciate a beautifully designed website — but has made it difficult to find any products.

Landing on the homepage, I was hypnotized by the Flash and interactive design, which must…

Scenarios, Spas and Cabana Boys

November 6th, 2007

Jeeves asks youI was laying on the beach, tropical sun beating down on my brow. I wasn’t glowing. I wasn’t perspiring. I was sweating. “Wow,” I thought, “I need to cool off.”

Just then, the resort cabana boy walks up and inquires, “Would you like some water mist spray?” And just like that, I was cooled down with the fine mist of cold water.

It was a life-altering moment.

I wanted to pack up that cabana boy and take him home with me. (I know…

Social Media Design Best Practices From Google

November 6th, 2007

Josh Porter of is becoming one of my favorite blog authors.

Tucked away as part of the new Open Social initiative launched last week, Google engineers offered an interesting best practices document of social design dos and don’ts.

Social Design Best Practices

A Few Questions for CVS

November 5th, 2007

CVS caregiver campaignDear CVS,

I recently saw your “Caregiver” TV commercial. I also went to the website you created for the campaign – The website has a place for caregivers to post their stories and enter a contest to win cash and a trip. I applaud you. These stories really are inspirational and authentic. But I was curious what this promotional contest has to do with CVS. So I clicked on the link to your TV commercial to watch it again.

Here’s the copy…
