I bet you didn’t know that the main characters of HBO’s Sex and the City represent one of the better examples of the four personality temperaments, did you?

Just about every personality typing system—from Hippocrates’ humors to Myers-Briggs/Keirsey or DISK—groups personalities into four primary temperaments. Only the labels differ:

  • sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic
  • spontaneous, methodical, competitive, humanistic
  • artisan, guardian, rational, idealist

and so on.

And, yes, each major character on Sex and the City typifies one of the four temperaments…

  3. Great point. Their headlines need to be catchy but also need to be different and appeal to different personality types in order to attract all types of buyers.

  5. @Jennifer – HA! Sometimes it feels that way, doesn’t it? In all seriousness though…. remember that personas are representing communication modes, and that is something that can actually change depending on the day and the circumstances. You may not be in the same mode when trying to decide what car to buy as you would be when deciding what pencil to buy. So, in some sense, we actually are all four!
