Trick Or Tweet Twitter Style

By Bryan Eisenberg
October 29th, 2008

In the spirit of Halloween, Chris Brogan and I would like to suggest to everyone who uses Twitter (if you’re not, there are many reasons why you should be) to play Trick or Tweet with the people you are following and your followers.

Because like me, social media has connected us with so many friends from around the world it would be hard for us to go around and ring their bells and get candy (not that I need any candy ;-) )

There are 2 goals for Trick or Tweet:

1. Connect lots of interesting people with other interesting people they didn’t know before.

2. Do some good with our Tricks (there is enough tricky things going on in our worlds).

Here are the rules:

1. Send a Tweet to someone and ask Trick or Tweet.

2. If they say Tweet then you must provide them with a couple of interesting people they should follow (these people should have less than 1000 followers currently). At the end of your tweet add #TrickorTweet. If you don’t provide them with someone new, then you owe a Trick.

3. If they say Trick then send them a link to this page { http://tinyurl.com/trick-o-tweet } where they will have to contribute using the Chipin widget below to charity. The maximum we ask anyone to donate is $20 for the day. Every cent we collect will be sent to charity. We’ll split the proceeds among three charities; Reading is Fundamental, The Center for Autism and the charity that is mentioned the most in the comments below from your suggestions. UPDATE: Chris and I will give our donations to our respective preferred charities, the money collected will go to the top 3 companies voted for in the comments below.

Let’s have fun, connect people and do good. Have a happy and safe Halloween.

Chris @ChrisBrogan & Bryan @TheGrok

** UPDATE 11/2/08 – We have received a matching donor. We are currently at $280 donated. Our donor will match any dollars donated between now and the end of 11/3/08 up to $300. We have all weekend to continue using Trick or Tweet for some good.

  1. Love the idea. Please give donations to Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Thanks. fastercure.org

  2. Love the idea! Let’s get it rolling! Let’s hope most people will answer one way or another. (The Trick or Treat answer) Otherwise it could get kind of confusing… lol ;)

  3. Oh and I think Home For Our Troops is an amazing charity!

    http://www.homesforourtroops.org

  4. Okay, I’m in!! Are we only doing this on Hallowe’en tho? It might get a little overwhelming if it’s more than one day.

  5. Nice idea

  6. Fun!! I volunteer and fundraise for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. 75% of donations goes towards blood cancer research and assisting patients financially with copays and medications. I am now 3 years in remission and believe that they are one of the few charities that actually has so many programs to help patients and to give them direction and guidance to find resources and support.

    go LLS!!

  7. This is a bloody stellar idea! Smart!

  8. This sounds like fun… Rotary International is my pick – they do tons of different stuff everywhere!

  9. When do we start? Timeframe on widget is now through Nov 3.

  10. Since Halloween is an international holiday, we’ll start it when it is Halloween in your time zone.

    Thanks everyone.
    Bryan

  11. Brilliant idea – count me in! Charity of choice Shoes for Orphan Souls.

  12. Love it! I suggest the 3rd charity be @StaceyMonk’s Epic Change since donations get recycled from one nonprofit to another through interest-free loans. So it’s the donation that keeps on donating! :)

  13. This puts the fun back in Halloween. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, perhaps the third charity could be the Frozen Pea Fund.

  14. I LOVE this plan…
    I’m in!

Oh… and my charity vote – Smile Train ;-)

  17. Just an FYI – The TinyURL.com/TrickOrTweet is the wrong URL…(got 404 msg) may want to fix that :)

  18. Let the games begin.

  19. I’m in!!!

  21. Love the idea, for charity I’m in with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Thanks for setting this up.

  32. Great idea. Please consider giving to The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter.

  33. A great way to honor a Yankee fan is with a contribution in his or her name to ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter, recalling the memory of Lou Gehrig and Catfish Hunter.

  34. Please donate to the ALS Association,Greater New York chapter…

  39. Love this idea! Thanks, Brian & Chris! I’ve raised money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the last three years. It’s a great organization and 75% of all donations go directly to help cure blood cancer.

    GO TEAM!

  40. Bryan, this is awesome, I love it! For the third organization to donate to, I would love to see some funds go toward the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, http://www.lustgarten.org/. This is a horrific disease which there is absolutely no cure for. 4% of people diagnosed live beyond 5 years.
    Come on trick-ers!

  41. Count me in, too. I’m on my way to the airport now, but will jump in as soon as I get home.

    great idea Bryan!

  42. I second Epic Change. And third it ;)

  43. The National MS Society please.

  44. How about sending some to our troops through eMail Our Military?

  45. Please support National CFIDS Foundation. CFS/ME (also known as CFIDS) is a very common neurological illness – as serious as multiple sclerosis, but despite being about five times as common as MS, it only gets a fraction of the research money. Like MS it can be progressive, sometimes even deadly. It is infectious and can affectchildren (even babies). Often entire families get ill. More research is desperately needed!

  46. Susan Koman as third charity. I am in.

  47. I vote for Epic Change too!

  48. Please add eMailOurMilitary. They do really great things for our troops all over the world.

  92. The third charity should be Epic Change! No doubt about it!

  93. I recommend http://www.fbpda.org as the charity – great work being done for people with Borderline Personality Disorders!

  94. I think Epic Change should get the third spot. They are a start up organization which is doing amazing! But if you are in the non-profit world you know how hard it is in the beginning. Their organization is amazing!!! They are so innovative in their views and cause. Please please please pick them!

  95. Epic Change should be the third charity!!!!
