Take ‘The Hidden Cost of Web Form Abuse’ Survey

By Brendan Regan
December 24th, 2008

Our friends over at FormArmor have asked us to take their survey on ‘The Hidden Cost of Web Form Abuse.’

Web Form Abuse is an important topic due to the following:

  1. Form abuse continues to plague site operators and marketers, big and small
  2. Anti-spam measures, like CAPTCHAs, don’t seem to work very well
  3. CAPTCHAs don’t remotely follow web accessibility guidelines
  4. CAPTCHAs are insulting to your human site visitors, are sometimes really hard to “solve,” and very likely are hurting your conversion rates!

So go ahead and take the survey: you’ll get a copy of the findings, and be entered to win a copy of Luke Wroblewski’s latest (awesome) book, Web Form Design: Filling in the Blanks. Maybe your survey data can help make 2009 a less annoying year for your visitors :)

  1. Hi Brendan,

The CAPTCHAs that really irk me are the ones that are required to search forums. I understand why you might use it for people who sign up for a forum, but every time to search gets me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

Phew, it felt good to rant.

  2. Captchas only bother me when they are extremely difficult to read.

My brother is almost blind and has trouble reading any captcha at all. He thinks they are terrible.

  3. Those who code in the Captchas many times have no clue how real people perceive letters and numbers. “I” looks like “1″ , was that a “J” or a “7″, one “m” or two “nn”s?

I’ve re-entered some Captchas 3 or 4 times, and still couldn’t get them right!

  4. Brendan, thanks for helping spread the word about our survey. I’ll look forward to sharing the results with you!

  5. I think that some captchas are not really friendly to use on a web design page. They’re hard to read for even humans.

  6. I am new to this, but agree that captchas can be trouble at times.

  7. I have recently run across some of the worst CAPTCHAs ever! I’ve had others look over my shoulder telling me that is completely impossible to solve.

I know they want to cut down on spam, but c’mon now!
