I agree that the key is "finding talent". That doesn't necessarily mean who has the biggest baddest degree, or even the most experience. Talent is often not easy to spot on a resume even.

As a custom product content vendor, our firm serves dozens of cross-channel retailers by developing content strategies and implementing those strategies with content that influences purchase behavior online. I am frequently asked by clients to recommend individuals for leadership positions in their online divisions. Simon listed passion, communication, desire to learn and problem solving abilities and those are absolutely critical in assessing a team member. I believe that a commitment to excellence (second place is not an option) and consistency are included within these characteristics. Simon is absolutely correct about the specific characteristics being dependent upon the role and that is the approach I take in making a personnel recommendation when requested by our retail clients.

I think you place an important emphasis on people rather than roles. The same goes when a company looks to hire employees. They may put out a list of qualification that they would like for the right candidate to meet, but ultimately, the decision is made after a personal interview, not after reading their resume and qualifications. A role might look good on paper, but personal interaction can bring passion and so much more to the job!
