Al Gore Discovers an Inconvenient Truth About Facebook

October 9th, 2007

Al Gore on FacebookOur international readers may not realize that former U.S. Vice President-turned-environmental-activist Al Gore is at once laughed at and lauded for statements about his role in “creating the Internet” — a gem of a sound bite, especially when taken out of context. Well, he may want to take it back. If this screenshot is any indication, he’d have been better off inventing “Web 2.0″; at least then, he might be able to conjure up a Facebook app that could convince…

Captain Hook Would Be Proud of this Email…

September 19th, 2007

Just got an email from Oceana, the world’s leading ocean conservation group. No reason, really. They just want to stay in touch, rid the oceans of pollutin’, over-fishin’ scallywags, and wish their newsletter subscribers a happy International Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day. And, yes, it’s written in the voice of a pirate.

Y'arr...

It’s a great example of how to spice up your PR without making it seem like you’re only after the cash booty. Pirates base their careers on the element of surprise. Likewise,…

Stewart and Colbert Take the Stand Against YouTube

August 15th, 2007

Property of ViacomComedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Colbert Report are the crown jewels, as it were, of the Viacom (VIA.B) family. If you think the shows are funny, just wait until Stewart and Colbert take the stand against YouTube as witnesses for Viacom, the conglomorate which owns MTV Networks, which Comedy Central is part of, and is suing Google-owned (GOOG) YouTube for $1 Beeeeilllion. Apparently, Stewart and Colbert are YouTube famous. Well, they were, until Viacom had YouG’le remove hundreds of thousands…

The Would-be Most Popular Blog

August 1st, 2007

In one of our daily editorial non-meetings — we like to keep it briskBryan and I were pondering one of our favorite questions…

What kind of blog would consistently dominate the charts at Today.GrokDotCom?

You see, other than deleting an irrelevant post here and there, stories bubble up from a link-based popularity algorithm on our RSS Discovery Engine that monitors over 5,000 marketing-related blogs. (Say that 10 times!) It’s especially good on days like today when Bloglines hasn’t updated all morning.  …

July 19th, 2007

Hat tip to Jared for sharing Internet Wasteland by Eddy Boston.

Feed readers can get it here.

Lyrics: Come on and Google me baby. Go ahead and ask Jeeves. Type in the query: “Eddy Boston, please.” But you ain’t gonna find me, Not even on broadband, ‘Cause I’m a page-rank zero In the internet wasteland.

I don’t care about your space; I can’t even find mine. I’ve been lost since the days of America Online. And you ain’t gonna find me, Add me to your top…

Robbers Google Their Way Into Safe

July 10th, 2007

Found this one over at Grok’s Blog Buzz . Seems a couple of amateur thieves tried to Google their way into a safe at the last minute.

The burglary at Bigg City, formerly Mr. Bigg’s Family Fun Center, turned into a comedy of errors early June 10. The burglars tried to disable a security camera by repeatedly spraying it with WD-40 . . . and spent an hour and 15 minutes trying to open three safes, apparently unaware that some types require…

The Crazy, Messed-Up World of eCommerce

June 13th, 2007

What if offline shopping were as cruel and difficult as buying online? What does that world look like?”

That’s the question posed over at Get Elastic in a series of laugh-out-loud videos about a humble supermarket shopper on a would-be simple quest to buy some produce. You can even win a $100 Amazon gift certificate just for subscribing to their blog! Let’s just hope Amazon doesn’t give you such a hard time during checkout…

(These skits remind us of Melissa’s post on the value of…
