Estimating Gender

By Natalie Hart
September 9th, 2008

Did you know that there’s a cool tool called Social History that will estimate your gender based on your browser URL history?

My favorite feature of this tool is how it breaks down by percentage how much of each genders’ browsing habits you exhibit, and correlates them to the results you receive. I cleared my browsing history and visited, what I though to be, a range of sites. Here are my results:

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 54%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 46%

Site Male-Female Ratio
youtube.com
1
ebay.com
1.11
craigslist.org
1.13
apple.com
0.89
nytimes.com
1.13
perezhilton.com
0.75
pandora.com
0.9

  3. There are 2 https in your link, Natalie (happens to me all the time with cut and paste)

Wow, I got 88% female – must be all the online stores I visit for my blogging research ;)

  4. What a cool tool! I tried it on both browsers IE and FF and although I got varying percentages, both leaned more towards male by a significant amount. Awesome stuff :)

  5. Ha ha!

“Likelihood of you being MALE is 99%”.

Damn do I feel extremely masculine for a change :-)

  6. I think this is really interesting and if can be used well is a browser bug worth keeping.
Peter Warden has extended it to get all the tags of the top sites and then build a tag cloud that profiles you.

  7. According to them there’s a 100% actually a Female. Haha, well that’s interesting.

  8. 83% male lol. That’s a great tool for marketing purposes.

  9. Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 6%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 94%

I guess I need to go do something manly today to earn my other 6%!
